BIO

Manuel Capaccioli (aka ManueL C.) is a contemporary artist born in 1999 in Arezzo, Italy, where he currently lives and works. His figurative and autobiographical painting practice explores themes such as vulnerability, solitude, melancholy, and alienation.

Inspired by Egon Schiele, Lucian Freud, and Jenny Saville, Capaccioli uses the body—often his own—as a tool for emotional investigation and existential reflection. The aim of his work is to create a space for introspection in which the viewer can confront a tragic vision of life—not in a pessimistic sense, but as a deep awareness of the pain that unites us, thus making a reconnection with one’s own humanity possible.

His creative process begins with charcoal drawing, whose outlines remain visible, and develops through layered glazes of oil paint that model the subjects’ skin. After experimenting on paper and wood, in 2024 he introduced canvas as a new support, further expanding his expressive research.

He has exhibited in group shows in Venice, Milan, and Turin, as well as in fairs such as Arte Padova. In 2022, he held his first solo exhibition in Perugia. His works are part of private collections in Italy.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My painting practice explores the emotional and psychological tensions of the contemporary human being, immersed in an era marked by individualism, hyperconnection, and alienation. At the center of my research is the body: a fragile yet powerful instrument through which I represent vulnerability, isolation, and the desire for belonging.

I use charcoal drawing to trace the forms, and then I paint with glazes of undiluted oil colors, layering them to build depth and volume. My subjects—often inspired by my own face and body, though rarely intended as self-portraits—embody intimate experiences that become universal.

The figures I paint, immersed in essential spaces, seem suspended in time: captured in moments of silent reflection, disorientation, or melancholy. Through this suspension between presence and absence, I seek to establish an empathetic dialogue with the viewer, evoking a shared emotional recognition.

My painting has an autobiographical nature, but it opens up to a broader reflection on pain, fear, the desire for love, and human fragility. I am deeply inspired by early 20th-century Expressionism, particularly the works of Egon Schiele, and I find affinities in the physical and emotional exploration of artists like Lucian Freud and Jenny Saville.

With my work, I wish to create a space of introspection in which the viewer can face a tragic vision of life—not in a pessimistic sense, but as a deep awareness of the pain that connects us, thus making a reconnection with our humanity possible.
